I put on a backpack, had the neighbor agree to watch the animals, and started walking across town to Penn Station. The doctor and many patients were there, shocked, and continuing with their appointments.
About an hour later I was leaving the office and was met by another image that sticks with me.
They had restarted the train system and there was a train leaving within the hour going to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania with a connection in Philadelphia. Only to find out after I boarded that service ended in Philadelphia. My Dad picked me up in Philadelphia and I spent much of the next 48 hours transfixed by the news. But finally I had to turn it off.
When I returned to our apartment near NYU Medical center the reminders were constant. There were posters with pictures of missing loved ones hanging on all of the poles in my neighborhood.
After many hours of spotty conversation with my family, I decided that I would try to leave the city.
Many people will recall that it was not clear if there were going to be more attacks.
The feeling was overwhelming, only to be topped a few minutes later by the towers starting to crumble and fall. One minute you could call someone and the next you could not.
My husband let my mother know that I was okay and they started a phone chain.
