To be eligible, one must be a female or identify as a female, reside in Virginia, be a junior or senior in high school and hold at least a 2.5 GPA. Essays will be judged by a panel of Council members and individuals who represent STEM fields. The scholarship awards will be presented at a reception at the Executive Mansion in Richmond, Virginia, in April 2019.

Applicants must be Florida students in grades 4-12 and compose an essay on the given topic.Winners receive a four-year full scholarship to a Florida state college or university and a trip to the Governor's Black History Month celebration.Southern Indiana eligibility includes the counties of Clark, Crawford, Floyd, Harrison, Perry, Scott and Washington.Additional scholarships include Outside Scholarships, Student Financial Aid Office Scholarships, and Departmental Scholarships/Assistantships/Fellowships. Morehead State University will continue serving as a host campus for the Kentucky Governor's Scholars Program (GSP).Mac Ertel was accepted into the Governor’s School for Entrepreneurs, and Harper Sewells will attend the Gatton Academy.Frisbie, who plans to pursue studies in a science- or math-related field and then a law degree, said his enrollment in EKU classes while at Model had allowed him to “become more responsible and get a feel for what it is like to be in a college environment.Model also boasts one participant in the Governor’s School for Entrepreneurs (GSE) and one Gatton Academy enrollee.The five Governor’s Scholars are Nate Frisbie, Harry Moberly, Mallory Smith, Abigail Vicars and Linda Yoder.“It is critical that we prepare all Virginia students to succeed in fields like science, technology, engineering, and math, and this annual contest is a great way to encourage more young women to explore their passions and pursue careers in these industries,” said Governor Northam.“The scholarships awarded by the Council will help Virginia women achieve their academic and professional goals in high-demand sectors that are charting the path of our global economy today and into the future.” The STEM Essay Contest was launched in 2012 with 170 young women from across the Commonwealth submitting essays focusing on their vision for a future STEM education or career.
