Despite numerous telephone, mail and internet scams directed toward older adults, relatives may perpetrate more financial elder abuse than strangers, suggests a new study by experts at the Keck School of Medicine of USC.

Using a unique source of frontline data -- instances of elder abuse reported to the National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA) resource line, Keck School researchers were able to identify the most common types of elder abuse reported and profile the alleged perpetrators.Financial Abuse At her son's request, an older woman sold her property, gave her son the profits, and moved into a 'granny annex' attached to his house. After a year though, the son said they could no longer afford the house and moved to a smaller one with no space for his mother, so she ended up living in their dining room. The house was found to be dirty, with barely any food and bills had gone unpaid. The police, adult protection and the housing office decided to help her move to a care home where she still lives. The NCEA resource line is a source for individuals seeking information regarding how to identify or report elder abuse.Of the nearly 2,000 calls logged for the study, more than 42% (818 calls) alleged abuse.Financial abuse was the most commonly reported at nearly 55% (449 calls).Family members were the most frequently identified perpetrators of alleged abuse at nearly 48% of calls in which relationship could be determined. The son made arrangements to meet with social services via an adult protection officer and a better care situation was arranged for her.Sexual Abuse Two neighbours became worried after repeatedly hearing cries from the flat of an elderly woman who lived on the same floor as them.
